Norwalk Symphony - Vienna Comes to Norwalk

Saturday, November 4, 2023

  • 7:30 PM - 9:30 PM

  • Norwalk Symphony Orchestra (map)

Vienna at the turn of the 20th century embraced elegance, experimentation, and outright decadence in one of the most electric artistic climates of all time. Johann Strauss Jr.'s enchanting melodies, found most memorably in works like The Blue Danube Waltz and Die Fledermaus Overture, coexisted with Richard Strauss's witty and wry tone poem, Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks and his riot-inducing opera Salome, from which we will perform the searing orchestral showpiece, Dance of the Seven Veils. Alban Berg's boundary-pushing Altenberg Lieder, which Stravinsky called one of the most perfect works of the 20th century, adds a unique and captivating beauty to the program. Please join us as we transport you with music of unparalleled richness.

All performances are held at the Norwalk Concert Hall at

Arts in Action Festival

Hosted by Broadway Advocacy Coalition, the second annual Arts in Action Festival is the premier space for organizations and individuals working at the intersections of arts and advocacy to come together to showcase their work, explore opportunities for collaboration, celebrate the resilience of the justice-impacted community, and focus the city’s attention on the many ways that the “justice” system is failing to actually create justice for so many inhabitants of New York City.

In its second year, the festival will include workshops, performances, screenings, panels, tabling from multiple NYC arts advocacy organizations and exhibits that will allow participants and organizations to experience the power of art and storytelling as a tool for creating more humane policies and systems. This year’s festival - themed “Envisioning the Possible” - will provide a space to demonstrate the role that art can play in imagining and constructing the possible just future ahead.

We are excited to have you join us as we celebrate these incredible organizations and shine a light on the vital tool that the arts - and especially the performing arts - can play in building a country based in justice and liberation.

About Association of Dominican Classical Artists (ADCA)

Back in the 1980’s during a period when the Dominican community in the United States, especially in NYC, did not have a great reputation, there was a need to show another side of that community. With the aim of projecting a different image of the Dominican diaspora, a group of Dominican artists lead by pianist Tilsia Brens, created the Association of Dominican Classical Artists, a non-profit 501(c)(3) performing arts organization dedicated to promoting classical music, along with its composers and interpreters from the Dominican Republic and Latin America. Today ADCA has as its mission to foster appreciation for the classical and folkloric music of the Dominican Republic and Latin America; to create performance spaces for its artists, and to bring live performances and music education to communities in Upper Manhattan that have been historically underserved in the areas of music and art instruction. Our two major projects furthering our mission are the ADCA Concert Series and the Washington Heights Community Conservatory of Fine Arts (WHCCFA).

ADCA's programs are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.

Sound Off! Music for Bail - Courtney Bryan's "Yet Unheard"

Join Sound Off: Music for Bail to ring in the new year with our first Massivemuse of 2023 in partnership with some new and old friends at Playwrights Horizons Downtown's Moss Theater.

As many Groupmusers may already know, the Groupmuse Foundation's Planetary Music Movement (PMM) is "on a mission to transform music's culture by celebrating and showcasing the artistry of Black musicians and composers" and we've worked together in the past to present string quartets written and performed by incredible Black artists. This time, Sound Off: Music for Bail is collaborating with Planetary Music Movement and renowned activist orchestra PROTESTRA for their largest show yet.

New Orleans native and Rome Prize-winning composer Dr. Courtney Bryan wrote her deeply affecting cantata, Yet Unheard for solo voice, chorus, and orchestra in collaboration with poet Sharan Strange in 2016, after the death of Sandra Bland in pre-trial incarceration. Bryan's response to this death, caused by misogynoir, police violence, and incorporation of money in the US criminal justice system serves as a lodestone to our musical programming. Our vocal soloist in Yet Unheard, the multi-talented soprano/composer/improviser Jasmine Wilson, will present some of her own music following.

Before the cantata, Voices of Community Leaders and Activists NY (VOCAL-NY) Director of Organizing, Jawanza James Williams, will present testimony on VOCAL-NY's work, the progress of justice work, and its future. And the show will open with strings, en masse: first, movements from Frederick Tillis' Spiritual Fantasy No. 12 for string quartet, then Akua Dixon's Efua arranged for string ensemble.

*Please note that doors will open at 7:00pm and the show will start at the downbeat of 7:30pm!

Sound Off: Music for Bail is grateful for foundational support for this programming courtesy of the YoungArts Foundation and the Abolitionist Teaching Network.

Protestra - Take a Stand: A Concert for Mental Health

Tickets: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/take-a-stand-a-concert-for-mental-health-tickets-516982918827

One in five American adults—nearly 50 million people—experience some form of mental illness every day. These issues are often exacerbated in winter, with 5% of Americans reporting significant seasonal changes in mood and behavior. Professional musicians, however, suffer from mental health problems at a disproportionately higher rate than the general population: Three quarters struggle with depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues.

Despite these troubling statistics, there are also ample studies that demonstrate music’s positive effect on mental health. “Take a Stand: A Concert for Mental Health” is intended to serve as a collective, supportive event for performers and audience members alike, as well as to raise greater awareness about the mental health crisis, provide resources, and work to remove the stigma associated with openly discussing these issues.

The program opens with Never to Return by Métis composer Karen Sunabacka. This composition for string orchestra was inspired by the composer’s great-great-grandmother, who suffered from mental illness as a result of difficult conditions on the remote Canadian prairies. Two well-known staples of the repertoire follow: Adagio for Strings by Samuel Barber and Symphony No. 5 in E Minor by Pyotr Tchaikovsky. Both composers notably struggled with mental health issues during their lifetimes; these seminal works capture the anguish and intensity of their lived experiences, yet also demonstrate their humanity as they searched for hope and light in dark places.

PROTESTRA Founder and Music Director Michelle Rofrano returns to the podium to conduct Tchaikovsky. PROTESTRA is thrilled to welcome Associate Conductor Danielle Jagelski, who will conduct Sunabacka and Barber in her PROTESTRA conducting debut.

PROTESTRA’s concerts raise awareness about real-world issues through classical music performance while also contributing to positive change in a tangible way. To that effect, PROTESTRA will donate a portion of ticket proceeds from this concert to two organizations that increase access to mental health services for under-resourced and vulnerable populations:

  • Open Path Psychotherapy Collective is a nonprofit nationwide network of mental health professionals dedicated to providing in-office and online mental health care—at a steeply reduced rate—to clients in need. Open Path envisions a just, compassionate world where all people can easily access the care they need to thrive. In partnership with mental health clinicians in private practice throughout the fifty states and Canada, Open Path provides middle and lower-income level clients with access to affordable mental health care.

  • IHI Therapy Center (Institute for Human Identity) is an NYC-based nonprofit psychotherapy and training center dedicated to fostering personal growth free of traditional gender, sexual orientation, and cultural biases. IHI’s vision is a world where everyone—regardless of their gender identity, sexuality, race, age, disability, or immigration status—can find safety and support through affordable mental health care that is respectful of their needs and experiences.

The concert will take place in person at the Manhattan School of Music’s Ades Performance Space (130 Claremont Avenue, New York, NY 10027). Tickets are “pay-what-you-can,” with a suggested donation of $25 (minimum donation: $1). PROTESTRA strives to make classical music accessible to everyone, and those who are able to donate are encouraged to do so. If the cost of a ticket presents a financial burden, please email PROTESTRA at team@protestra.org to request free access.

Mini Masterworks: Cocktail Party

  • West 74th Street New York, NY, 10023 United States (map)

About this event

Anthime Miller and Samuel Gray are pleased to announce the inaugural season of Mini Masterworks. By reducing large solo orchestral works to be performed with a 6-person ensemble, Anthime and Sam are taking beloved classical music masterworks out of the concert hall and into casual, intimate settings. Using a combination of grassroots fundraising and ticket sales, all the money collected for the series goes directly to the musicians. Each performance will contain the same program, but provide a slightly different audience experience based on the location.

Hosted in an intimate brownstone unit on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, this concert is for those looking for an exclusive, black-tie affair. With a lofted ensemble accompanying soloists against the bay-window backdrop of 74th street, enjoy charcuterie, craft cocktails, and champagne from the evening’s personal bartenders. Tickets are $130 for the evening. Space is very limited.
